Apples!

We would like to wish all of our families a wonderful long weekend!

Students in our classroom have been curious about Apples!

Invitation
We placed 3 different apples in the middle of the art table. Students began to observe and draw what they see.

Investigation/Exploration:
Students were asking questions, having conversations and making observations:
Joshua: Why are they different colours?
Pavan: Why are there red apples?
Kamil: Why are there yellow apples?
Rafeef: How many seeds are inside the apple? We can plant seeds and it will grow into an apple tree.
Students found out the little sticker on each apples told us the apples name! We started calling them:
Red: Delicious
Green; Granny Smith
Yellow: Golden Delicious or Golden Nugget

We decided to cut open the apples and explore what was on the inside:
Riya: They look the same.
Ryan: They are white.
Rahi: They are yellow.
Juliet: I see seeds inside.

The teachers asked what do you think would happen if we leave the apples outside, overnight?
Selena: It will turn brown
Riya: You can't eat it then.

In the next few weeks, we'll provide our students with various resources (i.e. books, ipads) to help them answer their questions. We will be posting our discoveries in our classroom on our co-created apple tree.

Students were given the opportunity to try each apple and describe how it tasted. Students used descriptive words such as juicy, sweet, and sour. We then decided to take a vote on which apple we liked the best and which apple we liked the least.  We used 10-frames and tallies--a great way to incorporate math behaviours.

Students made many other connections such as:
Misha: We can use apples and make different things like apple sauce.  Stay turned we're hoping to make apple sauce in our classroom this upcoming week!
